Gartner Predicts 2002: Enterprise Management

Letter From the Editor
Mark Nicolett - 14 December 2001

The outlook for IT operations and enterprise management (EM) during 2002 is clear despite widespread uncertainty about the economy and a general concern about security. This clarity stems from events and conditions in the latter half of 2001 and some general trends for 2002 that will set the path for EM activities in the coming year. This month's Enterprise Management Spotlight takes the trends identified in the Business Management of IT Spotlight and predicts the effects they will have on IT operations and the EM market.

Although there are many possible economic and security outcomes, a prediction of EM impact in 2002 does not require that we know which outcomes materialize. During 2002, EM activity will be driven by spending patterns that are already in effect and projects that are already in the planning phases. EM investments are typically reactionary, and the budget cutting that is under way will stifle investment in many areas. On the other hand, cost cutting, business continuity and resiliency initiatives will stimulate other EM projects. Overall, less money will be spent on EM software; however, there will be no lessening of project work for the IT operations group to cut costs and maintain appropriate levels of performance and availability for mission-critical applications.
