In November 2001, we wrote about the fate of eight leading telecommunications equipment vendors during the economic slowdown. In this issue, we take a step back and examine the entire telecommunications industry — from infrastructure to enterprise systems to mobile and fixed services.

Given the considerable resources that have gone into the research for, and related to, this Spotlight issue, the results should be an eye-opener. For a start, we challenge the widespread opinion that the telecommunications market is in dramatic decline. In fact, our research shows that some sections of the market are not only growing but are forecast to grow through 2005.

The overall picture of the telecommunications market that emerges is one that acknowledges the excesses — both in spending and demand — that the investment boom of 1998 to 2000 generated.  Read more
