Diversity within the IT services industry is overwhelming to the casual observer and the seasoned practitioner. However, the word that connects everything in the IT services industry is "service." Companies that are heavily engaged in developing the new "killer attitudes" will drive success in the next chapter of the IT services story. Simply waiting for the next "killer app," an attitude that in the past generated so much success for so many, no longer will guarantee success. Gartner Dataquest offers a new services mantra for the 21st century: forget "killer app" and think "killer attitude."
There are no entrenched leadership positions in the IT services industry. This is true during expansionary times but even more so under the current economic slowdown. In this Special Report Spotlight, written to complement Gartner's IT Services and Sourcing Summit conference, Jennifer Beck and Michael Palma lead a team of analysts to present our view of the state of the IT services market, relationships between buyers and sellers, and the emergence of new approaches that will initiate transitions in the market over the next five years.
