| ROI Manager for Thin Client Deployment |
The reality of deploying thin-client desktop technology can vary extensively, not only from enterprise to enterprise, but also from department to department. Some enterprises have turned to thin-client desktops, either via PC replacement or through software that enables PCs to function as thin-client desktops, and have seen immediate benefits, such as reduced staffing requirements and increased productivity. For others, it has been a major disappointment, since "time sharing" doesn't work for every application or every user.
To understand the implications of a migration to either a Windows Terminal Server and/or a web-based server thin client environment, enterprises must consider costs and benefits as well as organizational and cultural factors that may demand extra caution. From a cost perspective, a move to this environment will require additional license fees and infrastructure, such as servers. The labor needed to deploy this new equipment and to transfer current applications is also a factor. Enterprises deploying thin clients will need to ensure that adequate bandwidth exists on WAN links to support the desired number of active users, and they may find that monthly transmission expenses are significantly affected.
