| Vendor Selection for Convergence Server Solutions Model (CNVS) |
Packet technology and the Internet have combined to offer new alternatives to the traditional voice communications industry. The prospect of combining both voice and data communications over the same network is very appealing to IT managers. While there are many positive elements to this "convergence," there are many potential bumps in the road. Quality of service and network reliability are two significant hurdles that must be cleared before the benefits of a converged voice and data network can be realized. The systems that control this new converged environment are a key element in this puzzle. Vendors are taking many different approaches, from the traditional PBX suppliers, who are providing "upgrades" to their systems, to a new breed of companies, who are offering systems based on IP packet technology. As a result of this, many decision makers are experiencing great difficulty in determining the correct approach. Because of current infrastructure cost, companies must migrate to this new technology over time, making interoperability between the new and legacy systems critical. In this uncertain environment, evaluating and selecting a comprehensive set of criteria may take organizations nine to 18 months and require the participation of as many as 20 people on a selection team.
