| Vendor Selection for Enterprise Server Platform (SPE) |
Until recently the belief was that Intel-based servers were mainly restricted to Windows NT capabilities and were no match for RISC-based platforms running different versions of Unix. However, in light of recent changes in the world of servers — the new Windows 2000 OS family from Microsoft, universal acceptance of Linux as a standard and the newly released 64-bit processor from Intel — this is no longer the case. Intel-based servers are progressing further and further into the traditional Unix domain. They are quickly catching up with Unix/RISC systems in such areas as OLTP (On-line transactional processing) and Web serving. As a result, more and more organizations are choosing the best OLTP or the best Data Warehousing platform, whether the best match is Intel-based or RISC-based and whether the OS of choice is Microsoft or Linux or one of the proprietary Unix platforms. This model will help you select the best possible server platform — be it Unix or Intel — for your enterprise.
