Manny Fernandez, Gartner’s Chairman, Retires From Gartner Board
STAMFORD, CONN., September 5, 2001 - Industry visionary and Gartner Chairman Manuel A. Fernandez, 55, is retiring from the board of directors of Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB), effective October 1, 2001. Michael Fleisher, 36, who has served as CEO of Gartner since October 1999, has been named to replace Fernandez as chairman. Fernandez will become chairman emeritus, and will continue to serve as an advisor to the company. This transition reflects a succession plan that has been in place with the board of directors for several years.

Under Fernandez's leadership, Gartner developed into the premier symbol of quality, independence and authority in providing strategic information technology advice to enterprises worldwide. As CEO from 1991 to 1998, Fernandez oversaw the company's dramatic growth, from revenue of $46 million in 1991 to $659 million in 1998. Fernandez has served as Gartner's chairman of the board since 1991. Prior to joining Gartner, Fernandez held president and CEO positions with Dataquest, Gavilan Computer and Zilog.

"Manny's leadership at Gartner is legendary," said Fleisher. "The spectacular growth of Gartner from a research boutique into the world's largest and most respected technology research and advisory firm was expertly driven by Manny during the past decade. Our deep respect and gratitude go out to him as he closes this very successful chapter in his career."

"Michael's selection as chairman is the next logical step in the board's long-term succession plan," said Fernandez. "Michael has a long record of successful leadership at Gartner -- first as a senior vice president running business development, next as CFO, and for the past two years as CEO. I can think of no one better to lead Gartner as chairman and CEO."

Fernandez is currently managing director of SI Ventures, a venture capital firm focusing on information technology and communications infrastructure companies that enable e-business.

Fernandez also serves on the board of directors of Brunswick Corp., The Black and Decker Corp. and several private companies in the SI Ventures portfolio, and is a member of the board of trustees of the University of Florida.
