Gartner Dataquest Says Latin America Printer Shipments Dropped 12 Percent in 3Q01
Overall Printer Shipments Impacted by Slowed Inkjet Printer Sales
SAN JOSE, Calif., November 26, 2001 - Driven by a decline in inkjet printer sales, overall printer shipments in Latin American totaled 1.5 million units in the third quarter of 2001, a 12 percent decline from the third quarter last year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB). Inkjet printer shipments declined 12 percent in the third quarter of 2001, while the page printer segment grew 11 percent.

Despite experiencing lower shipments shipments, Hewlett-Packard and Epson remained the No. 1 and No. 2 vendors in the region (see Table 1). These two vendors represented 61 percent of all printer shipments in the region during the third quarter of this year.

"Despite the lack of success in the low-end inkjet, HP has managed to increase its overall printer market share. The company still faces significant competition in the region," said Federico De Silva Leon, industry analyst covering printers for Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platforms Latin America group. "Both Epson and Lexmark have been very aggressive in competing in this segment with many product offerings priced reasonably for the average Latin American consumer. These printers have become attractive for bundling with PCs, especially with local branded system builders and non-branded PC vendors."

"HP still remains the clear leader in the page printer segment, but in some countries, such as Brazil, it faces stiff competition from Lexmark," de Silva Leon said. "Epson posted the lowest decline among the top three vendors, and most of its decline was attributed to the dot matrix printer segment. Although it's still the leader in the matrix market, this technology is declining, and since Epson has low penetration in the page printer market, it must remain very focused on not losing any market share in the inkjet segment."

Compaq, which did not compete in the Latin America printer market last year, accounted for nearly 9 percent of printer shipments in the region. Compaq printers are manufactured by Lexmark, which explains why Lexmark-branded printers showed a decline in shipments from last year. If these printers were still sold under the Lexmark brand, Lexmark would have been the only top-tier vendor to see an increase in shipments from the third quarter of last year.

Brazil led all countries in the region with shipments of 546,885 units in the third quarter of 2001. This is a 1.4 percent decrease from the same time last year. Mexico was the No. 2 country in the region with 356,442 shipments, a 9.4 percent decrease, and Argentina was the No. 3 country in the region with shipments of 162,787 units, down 33.4 percent.
