Gartner Dataquest Says PC Shipments in Asia/Pacific Grew 10 Percent in Third Quarter of 2002
Singapore, November 6, 2002 — Personal computer shipments in Asia/Pacific totaled 5.6 million units in the third quarter of 2002, a 9.6 percent increase from the same period last year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB).

"The education and home sectors showed strong growth due to ongoing projects in the education sector in countries such as Australia, China and Taiwan," said Lillian Tay, senior analyst for Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platforms Asia/Pacific group. "Demand in the home market was steady due to the seasonal holiday week in China, as well as in countries where vendors offered aggressive promotions during computer exhibitions."

Legend maintained its leadership position as the No. 1 PC vendor in Asia/Pacific (see Table 1). Hewlett-Packard increased slightly below the overall industry growth rate, but with the integration process of the company still ongoing, and a careful watch over the inventory, Gartner Dataquest analysts said this performance is encouraging.

Shipments of desk-based PCs grew 7.1 percent over the third quarter last year. Mobile PCs grew 24.3 percent year-over-year. Market share of mobile PCs increased from 14 percent in the third quarter last year to 16 percent in the third quarter of 2002.

"Vendors need to segment their target customer base carefully to understand usage patterns and purchase drivers to increase more business. The mobile PC has been the growth engine for many vendor's product portfolio," Tay said.

China accounted for 46 percent of PC shipments in the region in the third quarter of 2002. PC shipments in China grew 9.7 percent. Korea, the No. 2 country for PC shipments in the region, had an increase of 2.7 percent. Australia, the No. 3 country in the region, experienced a shipment increase of 12.5 percent.

PC purchases still tend to be cautious and volatile until there are signs of sustaining economic growth. The global uncertainties such as possibility of war in the Middle East and terrorist attacks have caused uneasiness in the region, thereby holding back further investments in PC. "Many corporations are delaying to replace their PCs, despite an increasing need to do so as pre-Y2K machines come to the end of their life," Tay said. "Replacement activity is dependent on the performance of the company, and many of these companies are at the stage of cost manageability, so such purchases will be postponed to next year."
