SAN DIEGO, March 25, 2003 — Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT) today announced that Exxon Mobil Corp. is the winner of the Gartner Technology, Organization and Process (TOP) Performance Award for 2003. The award was presented today at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2003, in San Diego.

Gartner recognizes ExxonMobil Global Information Services (GIS) for its ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and performance management throughout its organization.

"ExxonMobil GIS adopted a holistic approach regarding costs that enabled it to clearly identify opportunities for improvement," said Clive Taylor, senior vice president of Gartner Measurement. "ExxonMobil GIS not only looked at distinct technologies, but it also reviewed processes, governance models and internal reporting. It understands the benefits of using metrics and fact-based planning to make sound technology management decisions."

ExxonMobil GIS participated in Gartner's comprehensive 2002 benchmarking program that helped ExxonMobil GIS identify performance and process gaps whose closure would generate significant cost savings.

Gartner TOP Award recipients are selected based on the following criteria:
  1. Ongoing commitment to continuous improvement
  2. Strong IT management skills and a willingness to be measured
  3. Visibility of benchmark results within the organization
  4. Strong partnership between the IS organization and management
  5. Measurement is used as a management tool
  6. Measurement is instrumental to the strategic planning cycle
  7. Significant improvement achieved as a result of benchmarking investment
  8. Benchmark data collected quickly and accurately
  9. Approaching or in the top 10 percent of Gartner Measurement's client database
Past winners of the Gartner TOP award are JP Morgan Chase in 2002, and Air Products and Chemicals in 2001.
