Gartner Dataquest says Server Shipments in EMEA Grew 21 Percent in Second Quarter 2003
Egham, UK, 28 August 2003 The server market in Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) continued the upward momentum of recent quarters with a double-digit growth in the second quarter of 2003, according to Gartner Inc. Server shipments in quarter two increased 21 percent, with shipments totaling 373 thousand units. Revenues grew by five percent compared to the same period in 2002, totalling $3.7bn.
According to Karen Benson, Research Vice President at Gartner, "A number of factors contributed to the strong shipment growth. Pent-up demand for upgrades and replacements within the installed base, as well as the availability of new technologies were the main drivers, but the weakness of the dollar was a significant factor in boosting demand."
Benson added, "The market has finally seen revenue growth following several quarters of decline, but much of this is driven by the low-end of the market. Spending remains weak at the high-end, which highlights the caution still prevalent among users."
Four of the top five vendors recorded shipment growth rates of more than 20 percent (see table 1). IBM recorded the highest growth, with shipments increasing more than 40 percent compared to the same period last year. IBM's growth was primarily fuelled by the xSeries line as well as the continuing strength of the pSeries line. HP maintained its number one spot in terms of units shipped with a growth rate of 21 percent.
