Gartner Says Asia/Pacific PC Shipments Increased 11 Percent in Third Quarter of 2003
SINGAPORE, November 6, 2003 PC shipments in Asia/Pacific totaled 7.7 million units in the third quarter of 2003, a 11 percent increase from the previous year period according to Gartner, Inc. The PC market was driven by strong growth in the mobile PC segment. Shipments of mobile PCs grew 41 percent in the third quarter of 2003 in the Asia/Pacific region, which excludes Japan.
"The momentum of mobile PCs will continue as telecommuting becomes more popular and accepted, coupled with a wide choice of performance and price points of mobile PCs which make them attractive and affordable to users," said Lillian Tay, principal analyst for Gartner's Hardware and Systems Asia/Pacific group.
"Of all mobile PCs shipped in Asia/Pacific, Intel Pentium M processor-based mobile PCs have increased from a market share of 12 percent in the second quarter to 31 percent in the third quarter of 2003," Tay said. "Strong demand came from Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. Availability of wireless LAN infrastructure, matured IT users, coupled with aggressive Centrino promotions from vendors have stimulated the uptake."
Nearly all countries in the region had an increase in PC shipments in the third quarter of 2003, with Thailand having the strongest growth, at 73.5 percent (see Table 1). South Korea was the only country in the region to suffer a decline in shipments.

China continued to lead the region by a large margin, but the country did experience a slight decline in market share in the third quarter of 2003, from 47.4 percent in the third quarter of 2002 to 46.4 percent in the third quarter of 2003. "Summer vacation promotions started earlier toward the end of the second quarter to capture belated purchases after SARS, which resulted in fewer shipments in the third quarter," said Annie Chung, principal analyst for Gartner's Hardware and Systems Asia/Pacific group.
All vendors in the top five listing had double-digit growth rates in the third quarter of 2003 (see Table 2). Hewlett-Packard and Dell had the strongest growth rates among the top-tier vendors. Gartner analysts attribute their success to aggressive promotions and lower prices, as well as venturing to new business segments helped them increase their market share this quarter at the expense of other vendors.

In the third quarter, from the major markets perspective, demand in the business segment increased 3 percent from the same period last year, while the home, government and education segments saw double-digit growth rates.
"The business segment is anticipated to perform better this year, as our year-to-date data shows growth rates already exceeding that of the previous year," Tay said. "The business segment has been spending and demand will continue to strengthen in the coming quarters as the replacement of PC continues."
