GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says European PC Industry Posts 20 Percent Growth in the Second Quarter
Egham, United Kingdom, August 6, 1999—Driven by strong sales in the United Kingdom and France, personal computer shipments in Europe reached 6.3 million units in the second quarter of 1999, an increase of 20 percent over the second quarter last year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT). PC shipments in the United Kingdom grew 31 percent over the second quarter last year, while shipments in France were up 37 percent over the same period last year. The professional segment led the region as shipments reached 4.9 million units, an increase of 20.6 percent.
"As of yet, there is no sign of a drop off in demand in the professional market because of the approaching year 2000 crisis," said Philip Williams, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's PC Quarterly Statistics Europe program. "Instead, the fear, uncertainty, and doubt factor are spurring demand among businesses who appreciate that time is running out if they are going to bring their systems up to date."
While Compaq continued to maintain market share above 16 percent in the quarter, the other top-tier vendors experienced growth rates above 30 percent (see Table 1). Because of aggressive pricing, Hewlett-Packard and IBM led the market with growth rates of 49 and 41 percent, respectively.

Germany was the No. 1 country in terms of PC shipments with 1.3 million units in the quarter, but the country posted below-average growth in the region. PC shipments in Germany grew 9.2 percent over the second quarter last year. The United Kingdom was the No. 2 country with shipments of 1.1 million units, followed by France, which had shipments reach 868,000 units.
The home PC market grew 18.3 percent in the second quarter with shipments of 1.5 million units. "Drivers such as the Internet, dropping PC prices, and food retail activity in France all contributed to the growth in the home market," said Mr. Williams. "One new driver in the U.K. is online trading. Charles Schwab already has 21,000 of its 130,000 U.K. customers online, and other companies are set to join the feast."
