| GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says Mechanical CAD and AEC Applications Software Market Experiencing Single-Digit Growth |
| San Jose, Calif., August 11, 1999—The worldwide mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE software market is on pace to grow 7 percent in 1999, with revenue reaching $3.7 billion, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT). The market posted single-digit growth in 1998 as well, when revenue surpassed $3.5 billion, a 2.3 percent increase over 1997. |
| "Software average selling prices dropped a bit during 1998 as engineers began moving from higher-priced UNIX-based systems to lower-priced NT-based CAD systems," said Sharon Tan, principal analyst for Dataquest's Mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE Worldwide program. "Markets in Asia/Pacific and Japan reduced spending on mechanical CAD software, which dragged down the whole market." |
| Four of the top five software vendors experienced stronger growth than the overall market in 1998 (see Table 1). IBM moved into the No. 1 position as its market share increased 3.1 percent in 1998. Autodesk showed the strongest growth among the top-tier vendors as its revenue grew nearly 43 percent. |
