Companies Demo Emerging Technologies and E-Business Trends at Special Pavilion During GartnerGroup's Symposium/ITxpo 99
New Emerging Technologies Research Highlights Trends in Human Computer Interaction, and Privacy Issues
Lake Buena Vista, Fla. October 11, 1999 - Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT) today announced the participants for its Emerging Technology Pavilion, 16 cutting-edge companies that exemplify trends that GartnerGroup researchers have targeted as potentially having the most influence on e-business strategies and information technology over the next five to 10 years.
The Emerging Technology Pavilion again takes center stage at ITxpo, the exhibit arm of GartnerGroup's flagship conference, GartnerGroup Symposium/ITxpo 99, which is taking place October 11-15 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
This year's Pavilion exhibitors are innovative start-up companies showing their technologies for the first time at a major exhibition. Selected from more than 100 applicants, the 16 companies will demonstrate the technologies and trends expected to dominate the e-business evolution. Those areas include biometrics, speech synthesis, network security, Web management, content detection, and a wide range of Internet- and intranet-related products designed to speed information sharing and access across an enterprise.
Besides the Pavilion exhibits, Jackie Fenn, GartnerGroup vice president and Research Fellow, Advanced Technologies, will unveil new research at a separate Symposium technology track that discusses the trends that affect e-commerce planning issues central to IT management. The research also profiles the effect that the technologies will have on consumers and society as a whole. According to Fenn's research, biometric logon for information access purposes (network logon, laptop protection, and so on) will be used by 15 percent of Fortune 1000 companies by 2002.
By 2006, natural language "command and control" functions will be integral in emerging operating systems. However, by 2008, the use of "synthetic characters," or avatars, will still be employed in less than 5 percent of e-commerce transactions.
"The most exciting areas undergoing evolution are the human and societal influences on the adoption of certain emerging technologies. Speech recognition, language understanding and even the ability to be recognized by one's unique iris characteristics are being incorporated in a variety of new technologies, many of which will be on view at the Emerging Technologies Pavilion," says Fenn.
The new research reveals that these human technologies will have a major impact on mobile sales forces, as well as in customer interaction on e-commerce sites. Within five years, electronic authentication will enhance mobility for sales forces. In addition, within that time frame, 60 percent of customer interaction will likely be of an electronic nature instead of person-to-person.
By 2010, authentication technologies, coupled with new display, retrieval and annotation technologies and devices, will drive the office environment closer to the paperless ideal that has been promised for so long, according to GartnerGroup.
In addition, the research points out that within seven years, more than 65 percent of U.S. and European households will have access to the Internet; that percentage will be higher in the United States, where PC penetration today stands at more than 54 percent. In 10 years, 25 per cent of the U.S. population will be permanently wired with highly mobile technology that is carried with people, and additional "instant on" capabilities will be pervasive throughout their lifestyles. Instant-on devices will appear everywhere, from cars to kitchens -- virtually every location where people work, play or travel.
Because of the increased availability of pervasive computing devices, Fenn predicts that a privacy backlash will occur against certain areas of technology, a reaction that it is beginning to surface today. For example, the privacy backlash could possibly derail certain applications of biometrics and data mining.
"This year's GartnerGroup Emerging Technology participants are unique because they reflect the evolution of e-commerce trends from both a technological and personal point of view," Fenn explained. "It is important that IT managers understand how to evaluate these emerging trends, and consider both the human and technological factor as the concepts are incorporated into their centralized IT management principles."
