GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says Wireless Applications Spur Growth in Mobile Satellite Data Market
Egham, United Kingdom, November 17, 1999 – Fueled by the proliferation of new wireless applications and devices, the worldwide mobile satellite data market is forecast to grow from an installed base of 368,875 terminals last year to 5,543,900 terminals by the end of 2003, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT). Dataquest analysts said most of the growth in mobile satellite data over the next five years will be accounted for by low-speed data traffic, in particular, short data/messaging traffic. This growth will be fueled by an increase in the number of devices equipped with embedded intelligence and the introduction of a large number of new Internet-based applications.
"Embedded intelligence is expanding the market for short data/messaging applications from that of person-to-person to include person-to-machine and machine-to-machine," said Gareth Owen, industry analyst for Dataquest's Mobile Communications Services and Infrastructure Europe program. "The efficient collection of data from remote devices is becoming a fundamental requirement for competitiveness for many companies."
The transportation industry is currently the largest market segment for mobile satellite data, and with the integration of wireless and GPS applications, the Internet-enabled satellite tracking and monitoring services sector will continue to grow. The military and government sectors are expected to be large users of personal messaging services. Personal messaging could also emerge as a source of demand in many of the world's developing nations. Compared with other market segments, growth in the number of high-speed data terminals will be small. However, data traffic over these terminals is expected to grow significantly, driven by lower air-time costs and new applications.
"Creating applications will be the key to success in this marketplace," said Mr. Owen. "Satellite operators must stimulate the creation of applications by teaming up with companies and developing value-added end-to-end solutions rather than just provide data transport services."
