Future of Online Marketplaces and Exchanges to Be Discussed at Gartner's B2B eMarketplaces Conference
Conference to Take Place November 6-8 in Boston
San Jose, Calif., October 4, 2000 - Business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce will grow at aggressive rates through 2004, causing fundamental changes to the way businesses do business with each other. The catalyst for B2B e-commerce is e-market maker activity. E-market makers are projected to facilitate $2.71 trillion in e-commerce sales transactions in 2004, representing 37 percent of the overall B2B market. EMarketplaces and exchanges will be explored in-depth at B2B eMarketplaces: Competing and Prospering in the World of Online Exchanges, a conference that will be presented by Gartner Group Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB) from November 6-8 in Boston, Massachusetts.
The 2 ½-day event will provide traditional brick and mortars with the ammunition they need to solidify their share in a very large e-commerce revenue stake. Gartner analysts will examine different business models and strategies, provide insight into the successes and stumbling blocks encountered by online exchanges in a variety of vertical industries, and discuss tactics to help companies survive the coming shakeout.
"The complexities of e-marketplace participation are just now becoming apparent," said Carl Lenz, research director for Gartner's e-Business Services and conference chair. "In order to understand how to collaborate and interoperate within today's e-marketplace environment, it's not only important to have a strategic, but also a tactical approach. It is time to step away from the ivory tower white papers and into the supply chain trenches."
The conference will address the strategies and tactics buyers, sellers, and key vendors in this dynamic, fast-growing sector need to succeed. Sessions in the "At the Bargaining Table" track provide an in-depth look at the current scuffle for control of the space among bricks-and-mortars, pure-play dot-com eMarketplaces and vendors. The "In the Trenches" tracks explain how to operate in an eMarketplace. These sessions will focus on the current state of vendor functionality, business process reengineering, business models/negotiations, technical infrastructure, and the partnership structures associated with eMarketplaces.
