Top Emerging Technologies Announced During Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2000
New Emerging Technologies Research Highlights Trends in Wearable Computing, Profiling and Privacy
Lake Buena Vista, Fla., October 17, 2000 - Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB), today announced the participants for its Emerging Technologies Pavilion, 21 cutting-edge companies that demonstrate areas that will be critical in growing e-business to its full potential, and in particular, in the evolution of e-business beyond the confines of the traditional PC.
The Emerging Technologies Pavilion again takes center stage at ITxpo, the exhibit arm of Gartner's flagship conference, Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2000, which is taking place October 16-20 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla
This year's Pavilion exhibitors are small vendors or start-ups demonstrating an innovative capability or application representing the beginning of a major trend or discontinuity. The products include biometrics, network security, speech recognition, and a wide range of products designed to speed information sharing and access on mobile devices.
Besides the Pavilion exhibits, Jackie Fenn, Gartner vice president and research fellow, has unveiled new research at a separate Symposium technology track that discusses the top trends shaping IT-related business processes and consumer interactions. The research also profiles how the contributing technologies will evolve and what the impact will be for business and technology planners. According to Ms. Fenn's research, by 2010, 70 percent of the population in developed nations will spend 10 times longer per day interacting with people in the e-world than in the physical one.
One key enabler to this trend is the always-on/wearable environment that will extend the anytime, anyplace reach that has been achieved for voice, through cellular phones, to include text-based interactions such as e-mail and chat. By 2010, 40 percent of adults and 75 percent of teenagers will have always-on/wearable computing and communications capabilities.
"Being able to communicate over all mobile devices is a trend that will continue to evolve," Ms. Fenn said. "Voice recognition, unified messaging, voice over IP and managing electronic interaction between consumers, suppliers and employees are being incorporated in a variety of new technologies, many of which will be on view at the Emerging Technologies Pavilion."
The research also reveals that customer-oriented communities and profiling will lead to an improved understanding of an enterprise's customer base and new revenue opportunities through new products and services. Ms. Fenn predicts that by 2005, enterprises will routinely capture 30 times more data about their customers than in 2000. Many emerging services will capitalize on the knowledge of the customer's location and surrounding environment.
"The Emerging Technologies Pavilion provides attendees with an insight into technologies and capabilities that will have a major impact on the future of business processes, work patterns and social interactions," Ms. Fenn said. "An early appreciation of these trends will help guide IT planners in investment and architectural decisions."
