Gartner Dataquest Says Latin American PC Industry Prospers With 47 Percent Growth in Third Quarter 2000
San Jose, Calif., November 6, 2000 - The Latin American personal computer industry was the fastest growing region in the PC market in the third quarter, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB). Latin American PC shipments approached 1.9 million units in the third quarter of 2000, an increase of 47 percent over the same period last year.
"Improving economic conditions in the region's leading economies, especially in Brazil, are behind this robust result. In addition, growth is being boosted by creative PC marketing strategies by vendors and distributors as well as a growing recognition that IT is a key tool for facilitating economic development," said Luis Anavitarte, director for Gartner Dataquest's Latin American research. "Interestingly, due to more stable or even higher prices, there is a regional balance between the factory revenue and unit shipment growths."

Hewlett-Packard and Compaq showed the strongest growth among top-tier vendors for the quarter (see Table 1). Acer shipments declined, although this was attributed more to Acer's exceptional high sales through Teléfonos de México (Telmex) in the third quarter of 1999. Local vendors, such as Brazil's Itautec and Metron, and Mexico’s Alaska, did especially well, as is seen in the growth of the others category.
