Roles and Responsibilities
Matt Light is a vice president in Gartner Research, the pre-eminent advisory firm to the global information technology industry. He leads Gartner's project portfolio management research community, is a popular speaker at Gartner events and in other forums around the world, and is widely quoted in the American and worldwide press. His thought-leading research includes publications that have: advocated since 1997 flexible PMO adoption in IT, including the landmark 2005 report "PMO: The IT Control Tower"; defined the market for project portfolio management (PPM) applications in 1999, positioning the vendors in annual market charts covering the space; focused more recently on the tension between requirements and agility in "Agile Requirements Definition and Management" (2005) and "Key to Project Success is Collaborative Requirements Definition and Management" (2008); and recently opened new areas of analysis in more holistic and lean IT management with "IT Porfolio Management: Waste Reduction in Three Dimensions" and "Flying on Instruments: The IT Planning and Control Panel."

Previous Experience
Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Light served in executive roles at Select Information and American Videotex Systems - providers of desktop productivity tools in the first wave of PC software, and of a pre-Web consumer information dial-up service - where he planned, led and controlled a variety of development and research projects. He also managed Auerbach Publishers' line of Computer-Integrated Manufacturing and Quality Assurance Procedures publications, worked in a construction project office while in grad school, and served as a research project manager at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
