The extreme and unsettling forces behind the plunge in demand of electronic equipment have wiped out the worldwide revenue growth forecast for semiconductors in 2001. The decline in U.S. semiconductor consumption, precipitated by major inventory corrections by semiconductor users and followed closely by rapidly falling prices, has been deeper and lasted longer than expected. Declining demand for PCs and communications products during the first quarter of 2001 has exacerbated the situation.
