The Great Recession caused an opening for innovation to create a revitalized "business as usual" for many organizations worldwide. However, innovation is performed against a backdrop -- a formative context -- of assumptions, strategies, and actions that can be very resistant to change. Overcoming the crisis and the old formative context's inertia can transfigure an organization and its leaders. This transfiguration will gradually change the role of the IT department and IT professionals.
