Properly used, enterprise architecture (EA) is a valuable IT management asset, helping align IT and the business while shaping the future of both. The problem is, too few CIOs are using EA appropriately, so they miss out on its full potential. All too commonly, EA's value is seen as lying solely within IS, to reduce cost and complexity. EA programs frequently flounder because CIOs do not apply EA to their everyday work with the business, IS staff, vendors and business partners. This report describes how CIOs can apply EA in four aspects of their work to realize business value: aligning IT with the business, communicating IT's vision and value, guiding IT investment and design decisions, and changing business and IS behaviors.
