In 2008, the worldwide silicon wafer market declined by 5.7% to $11.8 billion, due to the stalling of demand in the second half of the year. In terms of vendor share ranking, Shin-Etsu Handotai remained top, while Sumco closed the gap, and is now only 0.8 percentage share points behind.
