Let's Get Logical: The Convergence of Physical Access Control and Identity Systems
22 February 2008

Mark Diodati

The integration of physical access control systems (PACSs) and identity systems--commonly referred to as "physical-logical convergence"--can provide security, compliance, and usability benefits. Identity and Privacy Strategies Senior Analyst Mark Diodati discusses the challenges of convergence, including multiyear deployments, cross-functional collaboration, PACS upgrades, infrastructure integration challenges, smart card middleware deployment, and emergency access processes. In addition, Diodati assesses the status of Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) deployments. Finally, he makes recommendations for successful convergence projects.
