Bettina Tratz-Ryan is a Research Vice President and responsible for smart city and smart ecosystems research worldwide. She analyzes the strategic impact and business value of Internet of Things, data analytics, applications and complex technology architectures for cities, local government and urban regions. Her expertise integrates technology models with business measures for intelligent subsystems such as transportation, mobility, microgrid and buildings. She also works on the business impact related to the development of the Industrie 4.0 framework. In addition, Mrs. Tratz-Ryan understands approaches to build, position and implement operational green IT goals and process- and strategy-focused environmental sustainability roadmaps compliant to DIN EN ISO 14001 (1221-2009). Before that role, she was responsible for the analysis of strategic transformation projects of communications service providers worldwide. With Gartner for 19 years, Mrs. Tratz-Ryan has more than 25 years of industry experience in IT networking for telecommunications, utilities, transportation, healthcare and local governments. Mrs. Tratz-Ryan received two Gartner Thought Leadership awards in 2015 for the global accomplishments of her smart city research, as well as her contribution to the research on business impact scenarios of smart machines.

Previous Experience

Ms. Tratz-Ryan joined Gartner with the acquisition of Northern Business Information (NBI). At NBI, she was responsible for the European residential broadband equipment and services market, as well as contributing to research, assessing issues of the deployment of high-definition TV (HDTV) technology and videoconferencing equipment. Prior to joining NBI, she worked as a consultant analyst with Frost & Sullivan, where she covered video and broadband issues, the U.S. video and audio production and postproduction markets, the U.S. cable TV equipment, and the U.S. videoconferencing systems and services market. Before Frost & Sullivan, she worked at Siemens Medical Systems in Germany and in the U.S., conducting research on customer buying centers, healthcare reform, marketing strategies and customer order management.
