Gartner Policy on Corrections to Published Research
Occasionally, we correct published Gartner research documents. Generally, these changes are simple (for example, spelling or content changes that do not affect the meaning of the document). However, sometimes the changes are more substantial (for example, we find that the original did not meet Gartner quality standards, or forecasts or estimates are corrected). In these cases, clients who have viewed the document on gartner.com will be notified of the change via e-mail. That e-mail will include an explanation of what we corrected and why it was done. In addition, we post these changes on the home page of gartner.com in the Corrections section.
Clients who purchased reprints of these documents will also receive notice that the document was corrected and will be asked to update any links they have established.
20 March 2007
Updated High Tech and Telecom Provider Research Escalation Process
Gartner's Office of the Ombudsman handles more than 100 issues a month – many having to do with Gartner Research. As we start to dig into these issues, sometimes it becomes clear that an issue could probably have been handled without the involvement of an ombudsman – a discussion with analysts and/or their manager would have cleared it up. We therefore crafted a short guide and illustrative flow diagram to help high tech and telecom providers understand their best course of action if they have a concern about the objectivity, accuracy or completeness of Gartner Research.
If in doubt, never hesitate to contact the Office of the Ombudsman at ombudsman@gartner.com or +1 203 316 3334, and we'll happily help.

Gartner Analyst Relations Teleconference 2 October at 11:00 AM U.S. EDT
A message from Nancy Erskine
Please join me for an Analyst Relations call where we’ll share with you details about a new effort that Gartner has underway for high tech and telecom companies. Joining me will be Ken Davis, Senior Vice President, Gartner, who is heading up this effort. He’ll be able to tell you details of the program, what it means to Analyst Relations professionals, who’s on his team, and what you can expect in the coming months.
This call will only be a half-hour long, because we know how busy all of you are at this time of the year. And of course it’s really short notice, but we did want to get the word out to you before U.S. Symposium, in case you have questions or want to meet with Ken or his team at the event.
I really hope you can make it. We will be recording it for later playback, however, if you can’t.

Update - Gartner Research Organization Change
A message from Peter Sondergaard
The Gartner Research Group recently reorganized internally to better align and deliver to the client constituencies it supports. During our initial communication with vendors we received requests for further details of the organization structure. The attached snapshot of the new organization will provide you with the Group and Team level structure along with the names of the research managers and their associates. This information, combined with the analyst coverage map on Gartner.com, completes the linkages between analysts, their areas of research, and their reporting manager.
It is in all our collective interest to provide this information to the vendor community to help facilitate the research process and to ensure open and direct communication with vendors.

Updated Vendor-Paid-and-Sponsored Events at Gartner Conferences
Gartner's brand differentiation and therefore our business are based on our research integrity. Even the appearance of compromised integrity is unacceptable. For this reason, during Gartner conferences our analysts are not allowed to participate in special events, paid for by vendors, where attendees are solely Gartner and vendor associates. This policy ensures that our analysts are available to all conference attendees.
Update: If you would like Gartner analysts to participate in any vendor-sponsored event at a Gartner conference, please send an email to ombudsman@gartner.com or call us at +1 203 316 3334 with the following information:
Names of Gartner analysts you would like to invite; Number of end users you would like to invite (remember, end-user invitations are required); and Venue of event. Our general guideline here is that venues optimized to conduct business-oriented discussions are OK; "social" venues (for example, theatre, sporting events) are not. Just as with vendor surveys, our analysts will accept these invitations only when they receive approval from the Ombudsman.
This policy hasn’t been modified to make it more difficult to get to our analysts; it's been changed because a number of vendors have scheduled some very "social" venues for these gatherings, where the risk of the appearance of compromised integrity is so great that we believe we need to review all requests.
7 September 2005
Gartner's Copyright and Quote Policy - Compliance is important to you!
Gartner takes compliance with our Copyright and Quote Policy very seriously. It's important to us because it protects the integrity of our brand and our reputation for independence and objectivity. It's important to IT vendors and users as well, because it enables our analysts to express their views candidly, without fear of being misquoted, taken out of context, or used by competitors to either promote or disparage IT products or services.
We work with our clients every day to approve external uses of our name and research within the guidelines of our policy, and find that the vast majority of our clients respect our processes. In those cases where they do not, there are a range of actions available to Gartner, which may include, but are not limited to:
- Escalation to your senior management and CEO
- Imposition of quote bans on all uses of the Gartner name and research
- Corrective announcements posted on the Ombudsman page of www.gartner.com
- Termination of services
- Please report all violations to quote.requests@gartner.com.

Magic Quadrant and MarketScope Market List Now Available on gartner.com
We are pleased to announce that a list of all Magic Quadrant and MarketScope market research is now available on gartner.com. This new practice responds to many requests from vendors and users for greater transparency into our market research process and plans. Please keep in mind that these are planned dates and that they may change throughout the year. We update the list with changes as they occur.
Please contact Jenni Lehman, VP Research Methodology, if you have questions.

Analyst Relations teleconference
On a recent series of client visits in the Bay Area, I got some fantastic feedback from vendor clients, which I'm now working through diligently. A request that came up a number of times was to get a glimpse into Gartner's vendor product strategy. The good news is that there is a lot to talk about. Robin Kranich has agreed to participate in an Analyst Relations teleconference to describe what we have cooking and to answer your specific questions. Here are a few of the areas that she will touch on:
- How Gartner is organizing our product and content organizations to address the Business of Research and the Research Business
- Gartner's market-based approach to product management and implications to the vendor marketplace
- Gartner's commitment to the Dataquest line of business and our plans to invest in it
- Steps Gartner has taken and will take toward transparency to our clients
- Gartner's plans to bring together the recent end-user-focused Industry Advisory Services with the Dataquest industry offering
Please submit your questions for Robin by 9 September to ombudsman@gartner.com. You guys never disappoint with your insightful questions, and I'm sure this call will be no exception. I look forward to the interaction.
One other note: We will conduct focus groups specifically for vendors at this year's Fall Symposia in Orlando, Cannes and Sydney. These focus groups will seek vendors' opinions on various issues of objectivity, as well as Research methodology and architecture. If you plan to be at one of the symposia and would be interested in participating, please send an email with the subject "Symposium Focus Groups: [Specify Location]" to ombudsman@gartner.com.

Gartner Announces Magic Quadrant and MarketScope Methodology and Process Updates
Gartner instituted key updates to the Magic Quadrant and MarketScope Research Methodologies and Processes. We launched this initiative to leverage the best of both Gartner and Meta Qualitative Market Analysis methodologies. The goal was to increase transparency, consistency and predictability for Vendors, and to improve the value of these deliverables for our User Clients.
Markets are now defined and will be posted on gartner.com
The markets Gartner plans to cover over a one year period have been reviewed and approved by the SRB. The approved list is driven by client need and market opportunity, and will be posted on gartner.com in the near future with the publication date and the planned refresh date. Additional markets may be added at the discretion of the Analyst, Agenda manager, and the SRB.
Standardized tools and templates
A team of Analysts have reviewed Gartner and Meta analysis tools and writing templates and developed new tools and templates, reflecting best practices from each. The output of this effort includes a set of tools which create consistency in our approach and the way the research is presented on gartner.com.
Template changes ensure that all information pertaining to the Magic Quadrant or MarketScope is available in one document, including:
- Market definition
- Inclusion criteria
- Standard evaluation criteria with weightings specific to the market -low, standard, high
- Market Analysis
- Vendor comments
Standardized evaluation criteria
Analysts will now use a set of standard evaluation criteria, which ensures consistency over time and allows our User clients to better track the markets we cover. The standard evaluation weights are now low, standard, and high. For Magic Quadrants, criteria that are not applicable to a given market will simply be zero-weighted and will be eliminated from the overall scoring and placement in the table or graph. For MarketScopes, an analyst may choose between one and seven of the standard evaluation criteria. Criteria that are not relevant to a particular MarketScope will simply not be included in the research.
The following table outlines the standard criteria that will be used for Magic Quadrants and MarketScope research. These are the standard criteria that represent the starting point for analyzing a market, but naturally they are not going to be used in the same way for all markets. Analysts with further define the criteria specific to the market they are analyzing.

Ability to Execute Gartner analysts evaluate technology providers on the quality and efficacy of the processes, systems, methods or procedures that enable IT provider performance to be competitive, efficient and effective, and to positively impact revenue, retention and reputation. Ultimately, technology providers are judged on their ability and success in capitalizing on their vision.

| Marketing Execution |

| Customer Experience |
Relationships, products and services/programs that enable clients to be successful with the products evaluated. Specifically, this includes the ways customers receive technical support or account support. This can also include ancillary tools, customer support programs (and the quality thereof), availability of user groups, service-level agreements, etc. |
| Operations |
The ability of the organization to meet its goals and commitments. Factors include the quality of the organizational structure, including skills, experiences, programs, systems and other vehicles that enable the organization to operate effectively and efficiently on an ongoing basis. |
Important Point- The new tools and standard evaluation criteria will generate the Magic Quadrant graphs. Please note that the first time a market is analyzed using the new process the MQ graphs created may look very different from earlier versions.
Research data collection remains flexible
The standard, approved methods for collecting data include short surveys or questionnaires, vendor briefings, and reference checking. Data collection methods remain at the analysts' discretion and will vary by market based on market maturity, complexity and dynamics. Vendors will be notified early in the project which data collection methods the analyst will use as well as when they need to provide information.
Internal Review
Gartner's rigorous internal review process will continue to be used. Prior to the research going to a vendor for Fact Review, it must be vetted internally by an appropriate Research Community and go through standard peer review with other analysts with insight into the market.
Vendor Factual Review
The Vendor Factual Review process has been updated to increase transparency and consistency. This is an opportunity for vendors to review vendor-specific comments and the graphic or table before publication. Vendors have five business days to respond in writing with any factual corrections. Vendor scores will not be shared at any point in the process. In addition, vendors may schedule 30-minute calls to ask questions and discuss the research with the analyst. This review must be scheduled through Client Services. The analyst calls are a courtesy call and do not extend the factual review timeframe.
Vendor communication
Analysts are now asked to communicate with vendors at four specific stages throughout the research process.
1. Contact Confirmation
2. Project Initiation--including timeline, process, inclusion and evaluation criteria with weights
3. Vendor Fact Review
4. Courtesy Copy of Research immediately prior to publication.
In addition, Analysts have been given a set of standard communications to ensure the process is consistent and that vendors are informed during the entire process.
Coming Soon
- A Special Report showcasing the new research will be published in the September/October timeframe. An outline of the methodology and how to use the research will be included.
- We are planning focus groups at Fall Symposium to get feedback on the new research and process. We request your participation in this research so we continue to refine and improve the process!
Magic Quadrant and MarketScope Research remains qualitative research, and continues to represent the expert opinion of the Analyst covering a particular market. In addition, while these changes have officially launched, there will be a transition period during which Worldwide Analysts and Publishing teams adopt and implement the process successfully.
If you have further questions, please contact the Analyst covering your market directly or for general inquiries on the new process, contact Jenni Lehman - jenni.lehman@gartner.com

Gartner Copyright and Quote Policy Changes
We recently updated our policies to ensure our intellectual property is not taken out of context and therefore possibly misunderstood by those reading it.
The new policy is that if a Magic Quadrant, Vendor Rating or MarketScope graphic is extracted for use in presentations, the entire Research Note must be made available to the audience. Why have we done this? Because if the graphic is presented by itself -- without the context of its explanatory content -- it can easily be misunderstood. For example, without context viewers might think the only vendors worth considering in a Magic Quadrant are those in the "Leaders" quadrant. This is clearly not our intent, but viewers would not know this unless they read the Research Note surrounding the graphic.
This change ensures the policy is consistent for all of these graphical excerpts. (This has always been our policy for extracting these graphics, with the exception of use in presentations to a limited audience.)
The second change is that Magic Quadrant, Vendor Rating and MarketScope graphics may not be used in advertising. The reasoning is the same: without explanation, these graphics could easily be misunderstood by the audience viewing them.

Vendor-Paid-and-Sponsored Events at Gartner Conferences
Gartner's brand differentiation and therefore our business is based on our research integrity. Even the appearance of compromised integrity is unacceptable. For this reason, during Gartner conferences our analysts are not allowed to participate in special events, paid for by vendors, where attendees are solely Gartner and vendor associates. This policy ensures that our analysts are available to all conference attendees.
