Gartner Says Latin America Printer and MFP Shipments Grew 27 Percent in Second Quarter of 2006

STAMFORD, Conn., August 28, 2006 — Total printer and multifunction product (MFP) shipments in Latin America reached 2.7 million units in the second quarter of 2006, an increase of 27 percent over the same period in 2005, according to Gartner, Inc. Inkjet printer and MFP shipments reached 2.2 million units, while page printer and MFP shipments reached 419,057 units.

“The stage for the continued strong performance in the printer and MFP industry was laid a couple of quarters ago, with the introduction of numerous new products designed for emerging markets, which are now taking hold in the region,” said Federico de Silva Leon, principal research analyst for Gartner. “Low-priced units are helping the inkjet segment penetrate, not only the consumer segment, but also the small business segment with MFPs. Low-end monochrome lasers are also doing very well where color is not a necessity, but rather reliability and lower cost-per-page play a more important role.”

HP dominated the inkjet printer and MFP market in the second quarter of 2006 with 62.2 percent of the market (see Table 1). HP has the largest product portfolio and mix of single-function printers as well as the increasingly popular inkjet MFP, which grew this quarter by 63 percent.

Brazil and Venezuela posted the highest growth rates in the second quarter of 2006, each with 45 percent growth. This strong growth was driven by strong economic activity in both countries. Brazil’s printer shipments were also buoyed by the country’s strong PC shipments which have a cascading effect on printer shipments.
