Business process management (BPM) is a popular idea in the public sector, often thought of as being necessary for success in process re-engineering and integration efforts, especially across organizational boundaries. In addition to its association with previous process re-engineering efforts, BPM has been confused with simple workflow automation. However, there are inherent challenges in applying BPM comprehensively in government, few of which relate to the technological aspects.
