Gartner Says Worldwide External Controller-Based Disk Storage Market Grew 18.8 Percent in Second Quarter of 2008STAMFORD, Conn., September 4, 2008 — Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue totaled $4.5 billion in the second quarter of 2008, an 18.8 percent increase over the same period in 2007, according to Gartner, Inc.EMC maintained the No. 1 spot overall, finishing the quarter at 24.3 percent market share (see Table 1). IBM was in second place with 14.1 percent of the market followed by Hewlett-Packard with 11.8 percent. Sun Microsystems showed the highest growth year-over-year at 34.7 percent mainly due to a large increase in the company’s Sun StorageTek 2000, 6000 and 9000 series revenue. NetApp had the next highest growth with 22.9 percent. Also recording double digit growth were Dell with 18.3 percent, Hitachi Data Systems at 18.1 percent, EMC at 16.0 percent, and IBM with a growth of 14.9 percent. On a regional basis, Japan showed the highest growth at 38.7 percent year-over-year followed by Latin America, EMEA, and Asia Pacific at 25.2 percent, 22.3 percent and 16.6 percent, respectively, Growth in North America for the same period was 12.7 percent. “Although growth in North America was lower than the other regions it was still very respectable at almost 13 percent given the current economic conditions,” said Robin Burke, research vice president for Gartner’s global Storage Quarterly Statistics program.
