Gartner Predictions

Gartner takes a look ahead at the market for social software and collaboration via several key predictions and unveils issues that will impact vendors and organizations. Applications and line of business managers should monitor these trends and the impact it will have on the workplace.

Key Findings

  • The market for social software will experience growth in enterprises, primarily via departmental deployments.
  • While consumers have made public portal e-mail a core part of digital lifestyles, the use of consumer calendar services has significantly lagged behind e-mail adoption.
  • The IM client has now morphed from just being an instant messaging (IM) and chat tool to a fully unified communications client that supports various forms of communications.
  • Driven by dropping prices and new vendors, the long-nascent market for hosted e-mail services is poised for rapid growth during the next five years.
