Gartner Says Latin America Printer and MFP Shipments Grew 21 Percent in First Quarter of 2005, Boosted by Strong Consumer Inkjet Product Sales |
STAMFORD, Conn., June 6, 2005 - Printer and multifunction printer (MFP) shipments in Latin America exceeded 2 million units in the first quarter of 2005, an increase of 20.7 percent over the same period in 2004, according to Gartner, Inc. Consumer MFP sales increased 113 percent in the first quarter of 2005.
"Expanded credit and a more diversified product offerings, drove demand in the consumer market with increased sales of inkjet devices, particularly MFP units," said Federico De Silva, analyst for Gartner' Latin American printer research. "With the increased popularity of digital photography, the photo printer segment, which grew 45 percent during this period, now accounts for 16 percent of total inkjet shipments."
Lexmark posted an above-the-market growth rate, with a 22.5 percent shipment increase (see Table 1). Hewlett-Packard captured the No. 1 position in the page MFP segment previously held by Xerox, but saw its overall market share decrease slightly. Epson remained in the second position, as it enjoyed success from an increased product portfolio in its inkjet MFP segment.

Unlike previous quarters where regional performance was very strong across the board, this period had interesting variations, with countries such as Argentina growing 89.7 percent, while others posted low single-digit growth, such as Peru with 2.4 percent.
Brazil led the region with shipments totaling 531,000 units and growing 18.9 percent. Mexico, despite only posting a modest growth of 9 percent year over year, ended this period with 24 percent of the total Latin America market, only 3 points behind Brazil. "The gap between these two countries has narrowed in recent quarters, as the Brazilian market seems to be under-penetrated in printer and MFP shipments, especially considering the size of its PC market," Mr. De Silva said.
