STAMFORD, CONN., May 19, 2003 — Through 2005, 80 percent of enterprises attempting to build real-time enterprise (RTE) capabilities will seriously underestimate networking requirements and will have to make last-minute additions, upgrades or modifications to roll out RTE applications and capabilities, according to Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB).

To avoid potentially costly problems, Gartner advises businesses to rigorously assess the network traffic and requirements necessary to accommodate real-time processing.

"To enable the real-time enterprise, an enterprise's network requires higher availability, reduced latency, bandwidth on demand, and greater flexibility in quickly managing costs and services," said Bill Clark, research director for Gartner. "All of those requirements put increased pressure on network managers and the network management system."

According to Gartner, understanding the RTE network requirements is a cross-functional, multitier process that, at a high level, involves four steps:
  • Linking RTE with important industry drivers and determining key business goals that must be supported by revisions to business processes.
  • Benchmarking critical business processes and forming process improvement plans.
  • Determining the impact of real-time extensions of business applications to achieve the key business drivers.
  • Identifying the new real-time requirements that the application extensions place on networks.
"To react more quickly to opportunities and threats, business-unit leaders and top management must rely on an increased capability of their IT infrastructures to provide accurate notifications of key events," said Jay Pultz, vice president and research director for Gartner. "Enterprises that take all of the important steps to ensure adequate networking performance will protect their investments in the RTE."

Gartner analysts Bill Clark and Jay Pultz will further discuss in three teleconferences the importance of the network to the RTE. Two will take place on May 21, 2003, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. EDT, and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. EDT. The third will take place on May 22 at noon EDT. The teleconference, "No Real-Time Enterprise Without a Real-Time Network," will focus on topics such as how enterprises' network infrastructures must change to accommodate the RTE's needs, the role of wireless technologies in supporting a mobile workforce in the RTE and the implications involved in managing the real-time network.
