STAMFORD, CONN., April 2, 2003 — Industry leaders Tim Berners-Lee and Dr. Jeanne W. Ross will be among the keynote speakers at the Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB) Web Services and Application Integration Summit. Dr. David Luckham will also address attendees during a special session at the three-day summit, which will be held May 5-7 in Los Angeles.

Berners-Lee is the renowned inventor of the World Wide Web and director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Ross is principal research scientist at MIT's Center for Information Systems Research. Luckham is professor emeritus of electrical engineering at Stanford University and author of "The Power of Events." They will join more than 25 leading Gartner analysts and other industry presenters at the event.

With over 50 sessions and three powerful keynotes, the three-day summit will provide delegates the latest Gartner research and industry best practices around developing successful strategies for Web services and application integration initiatives. Topics covered will range from project planning and product selection to deployment tactics and long-range technology forecasts.

"As the next generation of the Internet, Web services will impact every business using Internet-based technologies and applications to reach internal knowledge workers, customers, trading partners and other stakeholders," said David Smith, vice president and Gartner fellow.

"Application integration is a central element in virtually all development projects, accounting for an average of 35 percent of the total project time and budget," said Roy Schulte, vice president and Gartner fellow emeritas. "Integration is an issue whenever a software package is installed, a new system is written from scratch or major modifications are made to the software portfolio."

"In order for businesses to harness the power of Web services and application integration technologies, executives must understand and react to the latest product and vendor details available," Smith said. "At this conference, attendees will be shown the reality of some of the most important technologies in IT today, and will leave with an understanding of how to reap their benefits."

On Monday, May 5, Berners-Lee will address attendees in a keynote discussing his views on the scale and scope of deploying the Semantic Web, as well as the challenges and possibilities businesses should expect and plan for.

On Tuesday, May 6, Gartner analysts David Smith and Daryl Plummer will lead a keynote panel with representatives from major vendors in the Web services arena, including Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Sun Microsystems and BEA Systems. The panel will address issues such as whether users risk being locked into Web services technologies, and how real-world business problems can be addressed using Web services.

On Wednesday, May 7, Ross will lead a keynote session describing the six key decisions that are most crucial to IT success, and how businesses can best make these decisions to drive profit from their IT investments.

Following the May 7 keynote, Luckham will discuss the growing impact of complex event processing (CEP) during a special presentation titled "Event Processing: Essential Ingredient for the Real-Time Enterprise." Attendees will learn how CEP, one of the most important areas of innovation over the next five years, will deliver instant insight into business processes and information resources, and how business decision making will change as a result.

More than 40 leading Application Integration and Web Services solution-providers will participate in the conference, including Microsoft, Oracle, SeeBeyond, Sybase, Contivo, Fuego, Inova, iWay, Pegasystems, Vitria, webMethods, WRQ, Tibco, Novell, SAP and others.
