Gartner recently surveyed business intelligence (BI) leaders to learn their experiences with BI platforms from 33 vendors. This research details customer experiences with these vendors based on a survey used in Gartner's "Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms," and compares vendors based on sales, support and product capabilities as well as effective support of business success criteria.
One of the findings was that "data discovery vendors continue to fare well in customer ratings but some slippage has been seen as compared to 2011; small independent vendors dominate the top spots on many ratings while large independents are clustered around the mid-points. Megavendors continue to be judged as below average on many key measures of customer success including ease of use, functionality and overall customer experience."
Salient Management Company, a performance management firm that develops business intelligence technology to help its clients improve efficiency and profitability, was positioned by Gartner, Inc. in its 2012 "Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms"
1 in the "niche players" vendor category.
2
Respondents to the BI Platforms Magic Quadrant survey assessed their satisfaction with vendors
and their products in four key areas:
- Overall customer experience
- Success using vendor's products compared against perception of vendor's future
- Product ease of use compared against strength of overall functionality
- Market understanding versus overall BI platform success and benefit
Gartner chose these categories because they portray a well-rounded view of customer attitudes on
sales, support and product capabilities alongside how successful the BI initiatives have been using those vendor's products.
"Gartner's four areas of vendor assessment all play to our value proposition in the visual data discovery world," says Guy Amisano, Salient CEO. "We understand complex, high transaction, high volume environments with billions of rows of data, so we have a high user adoption rate leading to breakthrough successes. We listen to the business user community and provide the analytical tools and collaborative capabilities to help them make better decisions. These enhanced capabilities are evident in our 5.0 Collaboration Suite with Storyboards, Knowledge Manager and Dashboard Miner."

Big Data can be a big headache for organizations that have outgrown the practicality and usefulness of single-server analytical tools, especially where self-service reporting is a high priority. That's why successful Big Data users are investing in Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) hardware, a scalable computer architecture that leverages multiple commodity CPUs potentially hundreds or
thousands to tackle large scale analysis.
Salient MPP is a super scalable, in-memory, multi-dimensional analytical data platform that defeats traditional limitations of speed, granularity, simplicity and flexibility in use. When combined with Salient's discovery visualization user interface, it provides an overall analytical solution preferred by executives, analysts and basic users to perform simple through complex analytics on massive data sets much faster than previously possible.
