GARTNER RESEARCH PROCESS
Our Research Organization
Our research organization consists of a flexible, virtual structure of global teams, allowing us to advise our clients based on their own immediate environment, as well as conditions around the world. Our decentralized, yet connected, structure enables us to respond quickly to market changes—wherever our clients are located.
"Any individual can have some useful insights into helping a client make a decision; but the competency gained form having five or ten times the brainpower devoted to coming up with the best answers is invaluable."
John Roberts
- Vice President, Distinguished Analyst,
Research

Gartner’s research process begins with the setting of our annual research agendas—based on the issues our clients are facing. The goal is not to set agendas in stone. Agendas are organic and designed to respond to market events, new insights and emerging issues. Priorities and agendas are driven forward by our research teams and research communities, reviewed quarterly, with our most senior analysts leading the thinking.
Research Teams and Communities
Analysts work in specialist Research teams, with each team focused on a topic or project. Research communities are a second structure that integrates teams and individual analysts in a collaborative environment to examine issues and topics, which are broad in scope and potential impact. Any individual analyst is working alone, on a team and often within several communities—always looking across multiple dimensions and agendas to deliver the best insight and advice available.
Agenda Managers
Agenda Managers are responsible for focusing the attention of our analysts on the questions most pertinent to Gartner clients. Their job is to structure the research agenda and facilitate which issues will be written as research.
Chiefs of Research and Senior Research Board
Each major research organization within Gartner has a Chief of Research whose role is to oversee the work of the group, and to ensure a consistency of approach across major topic areas. Together, all Chiefs of Research form the Senior Research Board, which is responsible for developing the broad Themes and Scenarios that will cut across multiple Gartner research teams.
Gartner Fellows
Each year, Gartner awards the title “Fellow” to a select number of its best and brightest analysts who have proven over time to be consistent innovators and thought leaders. They connect with the best of industry and academia to ensure that Gartner remains at the leading edge of trends and ideas.
