Track A:Web-scale IT: Can It Make Enterprise IT Competitive With the Cloud?

IT disruption is here. The approach to IT service delivery that we have taken for the past two decades won’t likely serve critical parts of enterprise IT in the future. The answer will be the adoption of Web-scale IT, which is the distillation of Amazon, Google, Netflix and Facebook-style methods and technologies to the enterprise. The impact this will have on traditional tool and service providers will be profound, as it will directly affect the fortunes of many of today’s leading IT providers. In this track we discuss the elements that make up a Web-scale IT approach and provide additional in-depth sessions that explore the ramifications across the IT technology, process and organizational domains. Hot topics by track: • Hyperscale • DevOps • Web 2.0

Web-Scale IT: Bringing the Cloud to the Enterprise

    9 December, 2013 (11:15 AM - 12:15 PM)

Large cloud services providers such as Amazon, Google, Netflix and others are able to operate at a speed and scale usually not found in a traditional enterprise. Gartner coined the term Web-scale IT to put a label to the concept of the way that enterprises both large and small can emulate many of the IT service delivery capabilities of the leading cloud firms. In this presentation, we review the concept of Web-scale IT and discuss the ramifications for the industry. • What are the concepts embedded within Web-scale IT? • What will be the impact of Web-scale IT on the IT industry (i.e., winners and losers) • How (and where) can enterprises implement Web-scale IT within their organizations?

    Leveraging DevOps for Scale

    9 December, 2013 (1:45 PM - 2:45 PM)

DevOps has quite a bit of attention and yet adoption is still in its infancy. Web-scale adds to it a broader view of “how to” at an infrastructure perspective. How should I plan for DevOps, or should I wait? Is DevOps applicable to my entire application portfolio and infrastructure? How will Web-scale applications affect my adoption of DevOps processes and tools? Which vendors can I trust to be innovative, or will it be the same old thing with a new shade of lipstick? These and other questions are addressed in this sober yet inspiring presentation about DevOps. • What is DevOps, and how does Web-scale IT fit? • How should you plan for DevOps? • How should you build your DevOps Toolchain to accommodate Web-scale IT?

Pervasive APM in Web-Scale IT Will Transform the ITOM Industry

    10 December, 2013 (10:45 AM - 11:45 AM)

Monitoring technologies must evolve from ridged complex systems with heavy integration costs and processes into a nimble architecture driven by customized visibility and instrumentation injected earlier in the application life cycle. Advanced APIs will also allow for the programmatic control of not only the key software components but also much of the infrastructure itself. The engineering team managing the monitoring must also evolve, requiring changes in the mindsets, skills sets and habits of staff including the adoption of new approaches to solving old problems. In this session, we explore how enterprises can adapt their monitoring capabilities to support a Web-scale IT environment. • What can the mindset for infrastructure and applications deployed in large public cloud environments teach us about required changes in APM? • What are the critical attributes necessary for monitoring at a Web-scale IT level? • Which technologies and methodologies should be adopted to ensure success while supporting and migrating existing IT systems?

What Can I&O Learn from the Netflix and Amazon Application Architectures?

    10 December, 2013 (2:45 PM - 3:45 PM)

Amazon and Netflix must build applications that delight customers while providing low latency, high throughput and 24/7 availability. IT leaders must understand the architecture and development innovations of these websites to move beyond current industry practices and implement a Web-scale IT capability. •What are the architectural principles of the most successful Web-scale applications? •How do the architectures of the most successful Web-scale applications leverage these principles? •What impact will these principles and best practices have on your architecture?

Building Your Own Storage: Can You Mimic the Big Cloud Providers?

    11 December, 2013 (3:15 PM - 4:15 PM)

The large storage cloud providers build their own storage environments to lower costs, achieve high agility and free themselves from vendor lock-in. Although appealing, this approach is more difficult than it may appear. There is hope for smaller operations however, and strategies exist to create a white-box-scale-out storage infrastructure that is radically different from those built with traditional storage arrays. Learn about the promise and pitfalls of scale-out storage and what vendors can help to build it • How does Web-scale IT change how we look at storage? • What are the ramifications of Web-scale IT approach to storage within an enterprise? • How (and where) can enterprises implement Web-scale IT storage capabilities within their organizations?

Design and Architecture of Web-Scale IT Systems

    11 December, 2013 (5:15 PM - 6:15 PM)

To engineer software systems that can work properly over a vast range of demand — from single digits to billions — requires new thinking and new patterns. This presentation covers the key concepts, commonly used tools and best practices invented in the crucible of necessity at the leading Web-scale operations. • What are the realities that demand new thinking and new technologies to achieve Web-scale IT? • What are the patterns, key concepts and approaches that work? • How can enterprise IT groups build and run Web-scale IT systems?

To The Point: Hyperscale Data Centers — Using Innovation in Process and Design to Achieve Massive Scale

    12 December, 2013 (8:45 AM - 9:15 AM)

Today's data centers reflect 20th-century principles. They are costly and inflexible. This session brings to light the innovations leading cloud services providers are implementing for their data center facility requirements. • How does Web-scale IT change the way we look at data center facilities? • What are the ramifications of a Web-scale IT approach to data center construction within an enterprise? • How can enterprises plan a transition to the Web-scale IT data center?

Web-scale IT Lessons in Effective People Management

    12 December, 2013 (10:45 AM - 11:45 AM)

Web-scale IT lessons extend beyond hardware, software and process designs. Learn how Web-scale IT pioneers leverage new practices to create new I&O cultures, foster innovation and engage their workforces. • How do Web-scale IT providers’ "people" practices drive employee engagement and innovation? • What are the practical "people" lessons for internal I&O teams?
