Track A: Establish — Building a Solid Foundation for Your First MDM Program
Like any journey, carefully placed early steps with MDM provide for success ongoing, and this track is designed to help you do that. We’ll explore Gartner’s Seven Building Blocks of MDM Success and how you can apply them as you launch your own program. Given MDM is a business discipline, not a technology project, we’ll help you build the vision for MDM, scope it out, build the business case and measure its success, and better understand the organizational requirements and process impact of MDM. You’ll come away with a detailed list of action items and best practices for embarking on your MDM journey in your organization.

Tutorial: MDM for Beginners
04 May, 2011 (09:00 AM - 10:00 AM)
Master data is the core data that links together and integrates an organization’s business processes, application and information systems. Without a “single view of the truth” that is shared across the enterprise, it is difficult to see how operational and analytical processes can be fully effective. We'll provide you with an introduction to MDM – what it is and why it is so important. We'll also explore what MDM should look like in different organizations and discuss best practices, ending with a discussion of the technologies and tools to enable MDM.
Tutorial: Gartner’s Seven Building Blocks for MDM – Start Your MDM Journey Here
04 May, 2011 (10:15 AM - 11:15 AM)
MDM is not just about technology, and MDM program managers should use a business-driven framework to ensure that all the component parts of MDM are addressed. MDM programs need to align with the business vision and strike the right balance between technology and governance and organizational issues. We'll provide an overview of Gartner's Seven Building Blocks of MDM Framework.
60 Seconds or Bust: Meet the Gartner MDM Analysts

A fast-paced opener to the event designed to introduce you to the dozen or more Gartner analysts who will be participating in this year's event.
Gartner Keynote: The MDM Scenario
04 May, 2011 (01:30 PM - 02:30 PM)
Interest in MDM continues apace. More and more organizations are recognizing the value of “single version” of the truth of critical data like “customer” or “product” or “hierarchy.” But the barriers to adopting MDM remain high; it is a different way to manage data as an asset, and it impacts so many other things in IT and in the business. We take stock of what has been achieved with MDM so far, and chart the journey going forward. We share our predictions about where MDM is going in terms of technology, best practices, the market and the vendor landscape, to give you the Gartner vision for the future of MDM.
Creating a Winning MDM Vision and Strategy
04 May, 2011 (02:45 PM - 03:45 PM)
The MDM vision details "what" is to be achieved – enablement of the organization's business vision – and "why" it needs to happen. Then the MDM strategy details how this can be made a reality. We'll explore the five vectors of complexity (industry, domain, use case, organization and implementation style) to determine the scope and characteristics of an organization's MDM strategy. We'll then provide best practices for successful MDM strategy development and the building of an MDM roadmap.
Roundtable: Experiences in Data Quality Improvement: What Works and What Doesn't (Pre-registration is now closed, please stop by the One-on-one scheduling desk to register)
04 May, 2011 (02:45 PM - 03:45 PM)
Join a group of peers to share best practices for discovering, defining, quantifying and improving master data quality. Participants should be beginners to intermediates, and be ready to talk about programs related to "customer," "supplier," "product," "service," "hierarchy" and other master data objects. Come prepared to share a best practice, war story, or success story.
What an Intelligent Idea! With the Second City Players
04 May, 2011 (04:00 PM - 05:00 PM)
A unique perspective on a serious topic, from the Second City comedy troupe. The Second City has been performing sketch comedy in front of audiences for over 50 years, making it the standard by which comedy and improv in America are judged. Imagine the fun we'll have exploring the comic side of the oxymoron "business intelligence," the debate over whether we master data or it masters us, absurd (yet painfully real) examples of data quality gaffs, and more.
How to Measure the Benefits of and Build the Business Case for MDM
05 May, 2011 (08:00 AM - 09:00 AM)
As this period of economic risk and uncertainty continues, business executives are dramatically shifting from “gut feel” to fact-based decision making. MDM addresses this need by improving the data quality, consistency and integrity required to make fact-based decisions. We'll explain how to measure the financial benefits of lower risk and uncertainty made possible by MDM, and how to build the business case for MDM initiatives.
Getting Started With Governance of Master Data
05 May, 2011 (09:15 AM - 10:15 AM)
We'll introduce the “newbie” to what is meant by governance and stewardship when it comes to master data and MDM. We'll explain how master-data governance fits into the wider picture of information governance, and review the many barriers that prevent and inhibit effective governance. For more experienced users, we'll reprise many of the best practices and user examples of avoiding and circumventing these barriers. This material is for IT users, as well as MDM program leads, and budding business users (stewards).
Rebel with a MDM Cause – an unorthodox approach for MDM success in Hollywood
05 May, 2011 (01:30 PM - 02:15 PM)

This presentation tells the story about a 7 year MDM journey at Sony Pictures Entertainment where unorthodox approaches were taken to drive MDM into the organization… and succeed. Whether you have it easy or hard in your MDM program, this session is for you.
Organizing for MDM: Roles and Organizational Approaches to Master the "People" Dimension of MDM
05 May, 2011 (02:30 PM - 03:30 PM)
MDM program managers face numerous challenges that have nothing to do with technology. The most significant of these involves harnessing the people to set the vision, fund, manage, and execute on MDM goals. It's critical to identify key resources, both within the MDM program as well as new roles outside it, that can influence the direction of MDM.
The Elusive MDM Magic Quadrant: One Cohesive Market, or Is It More Complex?
05 May, 2011 (05:00 PM - 06:00 PM)
Between 2000 and 2005, MDM initiatives (and products) tended to focus on customer data integration (CDI) or product information management (PIM), giving rise to separate, but connected, markets. MDM in these specific data domains has evolved since then, but the demand for an integrated multidomain MDM capability grows. We'll look at what has been achieved with MDM of customer and product data, and what the future holds. And then we'll discuss the status and future of multidomain MDM, and whether there will be a single, unifying Magic Quadrant for MDM.

Orchestrating Your Enterprise-Specific MDM Reference Model
06 May, 2011 (09:15 AM - 10:15 AM)
Approaches to implementing MDM are diverging across industries, use cases, data domains and implementation style vectors. Every firm starts from a different place — with a different technology stack, governance framework, and organization and political structure — and this makes "adopting MDM" very difficult. We'll highlight the more common patterns we see in MDM. We'll explore where enterprises start their MDM journey, then map these to an MDM reference model and explore the different paths to achieve MDM.
