Roles and Responsibilities
Richard Mitchell is a Group Vice President managing the sourcing, procurement and vendor management group in IT Leaders Research. The group covers sourcing and procurement of both product and services, focusing mainly on software licensing contract negotiations, asset management, vendor management, application services and infrastructure services. It includes a team addressing the market within Japan. Mr. Mitchell has 43 years of experience in the IT industry, and though his experience since 2005 has been in sourcing and procurement, he has also product managed a software tools team and spent many years in the telecom industry. Previously, Mr. Mitchell managed Gartner's Enterprise IT Leaders Peer Forum research team. Before that, he managed the IT Asset Management and Procurement team, and prior to that he worked in Gartner product management. Before that, he ran Gartner's Cross-Technology Group, delivering two products: Gartner Invest and the Cross-Technology Program (CTP). He has had various business development roles and spent five years as Director of the Gartner Dataquest Telecom Europe group. Mr. Mitchell spent his first three years in Gartner as a wide-area networking telecom analyst.

Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Mitchell worked at Tricom Communications, where he was responsible for an engineering team that developed network management systems and networking products. Before Tricom, Mr. Mitchell worked at Atlantic Networks, where he was operations manager for a team of 35 engineers. During this period, he also managed engineering teams that developed telecommunications network equipment. He began his career with Pye Telecom in Cambridge in 1979, where he worked on private mobile radio systems.
