Integration

Integration is a crucial part of any IT organization and comes with its fair share of challenges. Application leaders must have a flexible strategy for integration — whether integrating third party applications or internal systems — in order to modernize and transform the digital business.

How can you create a pragmatic integration strategy and architecture?

Integration strategies have often focused on the technology building block of the integration platform without enough alignment to business initiatives such as improved customer experience or improved ecosystem participation. With more IT delivery responsibility outside of central IT than ever before, how can we create a strategy that says yes to change and no to the old dogmatic ways of working? The proliferation of APIs, the rapid adoption of mobile, the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), the increase in interest around event-driven architecture and the need to combine all of this with a range of heritage applications, each with their own approaches to integration interfaces, demand a variety of integration architectures to be accommodated within your integration strategy.

What are the key building blocks of integration?

Integration is pervasive across every application portfolio, and the boundaries of what is and what is not integration are blurring. At its simplest, integration provides communication abilities between distinct components. At its most complex, integration can aggregate and combine multiple data types from multiple sources to help create new insight. This thread of research looks at some of the fundamental building blocks of integration delivery.

How can empowering different integration personas improve integration productivity?

Integration for many is still considered as the realm of the integration specialists with their complex tools and practices. However, in reality, many roles within an organization, such as application developers, mobile developers and application administrators, deliver integration without giving it a second thought. Empowering these different integration personas to deliver integration capabilities themselves, instead of centralizing all integration work, can dramatically improve enterprise integration productivity and help spread the ever-increasing load across the organization.

How can integration help me adjust to a multicloud world?

Many organizations are moving beyond the data center and cloud and are adopting multicloud as a strategy. At the same time, integration platforms are also adjusting to this new reality. This thread of research investigates how integration technologies are evolving to assist with multicloud scenarios and, in some cases, becoming multicloud themselves.

If I cannot buy a hybrid integration platform, then how do I create one?

Gartner published the Hybrid Integration Platform (HIP) Capability Framework as a mechanism for organizations to create a tailored integration platform aligned to business need instead of the traditional technology-based approaches of the past. However, some clients still ask if this is something that you can buy from one vendor. Some vendors may be happy to position their technology as an "out of the box" hybrid integration platform. However, in most cases, you will need to take into account the requirements of other ad hoc and citizen integration personas, which in turn will most likely bring in more technologies from other vendors.

How can I employ artificial intelligence to improve my integration delivery?

Digital integrator technologies apply machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to facilitate the resolution of complex integration problems. Digital integrator technologies typically manifest themselves in the following ways:

  • Engagement — Changing the user experience of the various integration personas through highly efficient channels such as conversational interactions using chatbot or virtual personal assistant (VPA) technologies.
  • Automation — Simplifying the integration development process by suggesting next-best actions or prepackaged integration content for leverage as part of the creation of an integration process, as well as automating the semantic reconciliation of different data objects.
  • Insight — Detecting patterns observed in activities and data through integrated, coherent views. Guidance is provided for integration process improvements, as well as operational intelligence of the integration platform itself, for behaviors such as just-in-time deployment, elastic scaling and self-healing.

Built to apply AI techniques to resolve complex integration problems, digital integrator technologies will evolve to discover, learn and apply integration processing to make business solutions work together.
