Ita Buttrose

AC, OBE, Media trailblazer, Businesswoman, Best-selling Author and 2013 Australian of the Year
Ita Buttrose is a legendary media trailblazer, businesswoman, best-selling author and former Australian of the Year.

Currently, she is Chair of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Her media career began at 15 as a copygirl on The Australian Women’s Weekly. She rose through the ranks to become the founding editor of Cleo, the youngest ever editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly, the first woman to ever edit a major metropolitan newspaper in Australia as Editor-in-Chief of the Sydney Daily and Sunday Telegraphs. She was also the first female director on the board of News Ltd Australia.

In 2019 Ita Buttrose became a Companion of the Order of Australia for her service to the community through leadership in the media, the arts, the health sector and as a role model.

On International Women’s Day 2019 she was selected as the inaugural Australian Shero doll, one of 20 Barbie Dolls recognising female achievers and role models around the world on the occasion of Barbie’s 60th anniversary.

She is a committed community and welfare contributor and is patron of Dementia Australia and the Macular Disease Foundation Australia, and Emeritus Director of Arthritis Australia.

She received an AO in 1988 for her services to the community leading Australia's HIV/AIDS Education Program, an OBE for her services to journalism, and a Centenary Medal for business leadership.

She is a founding member and former president of Chief Executive Women and has written 11 books, including her best-selling autobiography 'A Passionate Life'.
