Indian Railways (IR) operates over 4000 daily reserved passenger trains on its network spanning 68,000 kilometres with annual revenues exceeding USD 5 Billion. IR recently operationalised a seat capacity optimisation Decision Support System. It has led to an increase of 6-8% increase in confirmed ticket availability at the time of booking, with a similar increase expected in the revenues without adding a single seat! A multi-pronged approach reversed the tide from a potential failure – developing an analytics architecture, product-centric focus, ergonomic user experience, end-to-end digitization, scrum methodology, business process re-engineering, top management support, and an extensive outreach program.
