How to Choose an Organizational Structure for Digital Business
Ivar Berntz, Sr Director Analyst, Gartner

Stories abound about how born-digital companies completely abolished the traditional organizational structure and became extremely successful. This in turn causes CEOs to ask CIOs, who also happen to be digital business leaders, what is the appropriate organizational structure they should use for a new digital enterprise. Is there an ideal structure that fits my company? How does it relate to the operational model? What about changing the structure of an existing digital operation, is it straightforward?

Spotlight Session: How to Lead Generation Z
Daniel Sanchez Reina, Sr Director Analyst, Gartner

Much has been written and spoken about Millennials but very little about Centennials. And the headache for companies has not really been the former ones (who in average are already in their mid thirties) but the latter. Centennials are really the first digital-native generation. CIOs are starting to get frustrated with their first experiences with Centennials (the older ones are around 23-24 years old, that is, they are starting to enter the labor market): Centennials exhibit short attention span, they get demotivated very quickly, they only commit to what they want to commit to versus what the company needs. There is clearly a mismatch between how CIOs lead Centennials and how they need to be led. A research is being carried out about this at the moment.

CIO Story: Product Orientation IT Organization — The CIO Becomes Product Manager
Dr. Bettina Uhlich, CIO and Global Head of IT Services, Evonik Industries AG

In all companies, IT penetration is increasing, business models and business processes are becoming digital, and data is turning into assets.
Digital solutions are getting more complex, which poses new challenges for CIOs. The IT department must adapt to new integrated end-to-end solutions and deliver products that can be integrated quickly and accurately into the businesses and processes.
Product orientation from a business perspective makes IT more understandable and tangible for business partners, making business integration easier. Within IT, functional responsibility gives way to clear product responsibility. New roles, such as product managers, solution designers or operations managers, work together in a networked and result-oriented way; classic hierarchical organizations are replaced or supplemented by networks.
At the interface to the business a consistent and comprehensive product design is in the foreground. Product design teams rapidly work on new IT products that can be ordered in easy-to-understand language in new product catalogs. The product design teams are supported by efficient support and development teams, the IT infrastructure is aligned to the product requirements. Product-oriented organization is an important part of Evonik’s NexGen IT strategy with the goals of new business integration, new organization and new architecture. “Product over Project” and “Network over Hierarchy” are the key messages for the cultural change in IT.

Daniel Sanchez Reina, Sr Director Analyst, Gartner

High-performing teams standout because they do and behave differently. Although building this kind of teams can often feel more like art than science, there are a set of practical steps that CIOs can use — how can I identify whether am I doing it right or not? Does pulling the best performers together guarantee a high-performing team? Is it necessarily a long and winding road, or are there catalysts to accelerate it?
