Joe Garner joined Nationwide Building Society as CEO in April 2016, inspired by the Society’s principle of mutuality and service ethos. Joe’s mission has been to inspire colleagues to remain true to the Society’s social purpose; using the power of the collective to improve people’s lives. Joe is passionate about Nationwide’s core purpose of ‘building society, nationwide’. In September 2018 Nationwide announced a £4.1 billion five-year investment in the future of the Society, of which the greatest part will be on technology. As a building society Nationwide is owned by and run for the benefit of its 15 million members, and member needs are at the heart of this investment. Nationwide is committed to delivering technological innovation, but with a human touch. We’ll be exploring how in this Mastermind Interview with Joe. Consumer-focussed organisations have been at the heart of Joe’s working life. He spent his early career with consumer products companies, Procter & Gamble and Dixons Carphone. He was then invited to lead larger organisations, first as Head of HSBC’s UK retail and commercial businesses from 2010 to 2012. Then, in 2014 he became CEO at Openreach, the UK’s digital infrastructure provider. Between 2011 and 2013, Joe was Chair of the Financial Conduct Authority Practitioner Panel, re-joining as an FCA panel member in 2016. In addition, between 2007 and 2010, he was a non-executive Director of the Financial Ombudsman Service. Joe is Chairman of the British Triathlon Trust. He lives in South London with his wife and son.
