Vivek Wadhera

Keynote Speaker; JSE-listed COO; Thought Leader on Culture & Design Thinking
Vivek is a keynote speaker & management consultant on Cultural Transformation and Tech & Innovation. His work primarily focuses on how companies & communities can transform culture authentically via strong employee & citizen engagement. He achieves this using mainly 2 approaches: 1) appealing to heads & hearts, using approaches like Design Thinking; & 2) influencing culture, using narratives & stories. Vivek has worked with clients to explore questions ranging from "how do we create a culture of innovation without cheaply imitating a market leader?" to "how does a community modernise without Westernising; how do we transform yet also retain the essence of our identity?” Before pursuing this passion, he was a COO at Choppies Supermarkets, a ZAR ~15 Billion (USD ~1 Billion) retail corporate, which was successfully listed on the JSE in 2015. Prior to this, Vivek headed up other departments, group-wide, at Choppies; these included Strategy, IT, HR, and Marketing. Before Choppies, he was a digital data executive at MFS Africa, a South Africa-based fintech startup; MFS has connected 180 million mobile money wallets across Africa & was rated by Fast Company as Africa’s 2nd Most Innovative Company, in 2017. Vivek has also served in senior management roles at Fortune 500 corporates like Micron Technology & Harley-Davidson, both in the US. He got his MBA at the Kellogg School of Management & BEng at the University of Arizona. Vivek’s experience has covered 20 countries, 4 continents, and African, Western, and Indian cultures. He lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Exclusive CIO Lunch: Cultural Disruption — Transform your Culture to Innovate

In this compelling & entertaining talk, Vivek shares how you can innovate to become a great brand. He shows how you need to disrupt your business culture to connect with different stakeholder groups & cultures (e.g. millennials) – or risk extinction. And he then presents a toolkit allowing you to innovate for such diverse users. This toolkit gives you superpowers like: getting into your customer’s head to figure out what they’re thinking; how to harness the potential of “power users” of your product; and how to unlearn bad habits so that your mind becomes a powerhouse of creativity. Woven around these concepts is his hilarious personal journey, from growing up in small-town Botswana, to working in the USA for Harley-Davidson, to returning to SA. He also draws on simple examples from industries like technology, fashion, aviation, and the public sector.
