IT Asset Management Leaders: Navigating the Evolution of ITAM

Q&A with Ryan Stefani

In this Q&A, we hear from Ryan Stefani, Gartner Senior Principal Analyst and track manager, who shares insights into the challenges faced by IT asset managers in 2019 and beyond, and discusses how this track can help IT asset management (ITAM)  leaders find solutions to these challenges.

What are the biggest challenges facing ITAM leaders?

Historically, ITAM leaders have been tasked with managing and optimizing traditional IT assets such as laptops, servers and on-premises software throughout their life. This task on its own proves challenging. Now, with the widely accepted use of “as a service” infrastructure and application delivery models, and with the lines between IT assets and business assets becoming blurred, the challenge has become more complex. ITAM leaders are being forced to redefine how they operate in this new world, while continuing to manage and optimize traditional IT assets throughout their life.

This redefined and expanded scope for ITAM also leaves organizations in search of new technologies that help automate the management of these assets. While there are many vendors that support ITAM, there is no one solution that can satisfy every demand. Instead, the tool and service provider market is made up of fragmented offerings that only cover a portion of the functionality required to manage all assets throughout the life cycle.

To compound these challenges, organizations often overlook ITAM as an administrative function that provides little value to the business. This results in a lack of sufficient investments and C-level support that is required to enable ITAM. Without top-down support, organizations will have little control over their IT assets, which have major impacts on information security and the bottom line of an organization. This leaves organizations rapidly searching for answers, and trying to dig themselves out of a hole, which often leads to reactionary measures that do not account for the development of a comprehensive ITAM strategy.

How does ITAM evolve to rapidly and effectively to become the technology asset governance engine supporting digital business initiatives and enabling outcomes?

ITAM leaders must raise awareness of the value they can bring, and build the associated business case to get the investments and top-down support required to be successful. They must also position themselves as strategic partners at the core of the life cycle using a balance of internal staff and service providers to assist with tool implementations, process and governance.

What is the one take-away an attendee should walk away with from your track?

A complete understanding of ITAM as a whole. That means a full understanding of the scope, tools, processes, people, governance strategies, and the best practices to help mature ITAM to deliver real business value.
