Last April we expressed reservations about the efficacy of the self-checkout systems rapidly being adopted by retailers. However, two recent events--IBM's acquisition of self-checkout partner PSI and Home Depot's self-checkout cheerleading during its third-quarter earnings announcement--put a clear exclamation point on self-checkout as a viable and critical consumer selling technology platform.
