Retailers for many years ran their businesses without the benefit of advanced analytic software. Decisions were often made intuitively, yielding inconsistent results. But software vendors addressed this need, and successful retailers began using the tools to achieve competitive advantage. GERS Retail Systems, for example, recently unveiled two such products: PLANalyst, a merchandise and assortment planning, allocation, and markdown management application, and RetailAnalyst, a business intelligence application.
