PLM makes sense to business leaders looking to take advantage of Internet-based collaboration to improve product development and lifecycle management. At the same time, grassroots deployments of PLM technology are creating a morass of disconnected systems. This will become a systems nightmare for companies that lack a coherent approach to defining the product system of record. It's not that difficult to do if the starting point is corporate competitive strategy.
