Rockwell Automation's purchase of Sequencia Corporation's batch automation business and rpmSeries software once again validates how aggressively the automation vendors are moving up into manufacturing IT. Automation vendors are realizing that the commoditized automation technology market, where they sold engineering services and technologies, cannot sustain growth. Yesterday's resignation of ABB CEO Goran Lindahl in favor of a younger, more IT-savvy Jorgan Centerman is yet another manifestation of the subtle repositioning of these automation giants around IT capability rather than just engineering.
